Day 173 - Categorizing in Grade 2 - Mrs. Mondello - Memorial School Reading Specialist

This post first appeared on the Burlington Keys to Literacy Blog

Students sort and categorize pictures words and objects across the curriculum and from the very start of Kindergarten. This year’s KTL training gave me a deeper understanding of how learning to organizing words and discussing the connections between and among a group of words is the beginning of implied main idea. When a child can articulate the connection within a group of details they begin the process of finding the main idea.

In this activity, we asked a second-grade group of students with experience in categorizing words into previously labeled buckets, (labels) to sort then identify the labels for the buckets. The discussion groups got right to work sorting and determining how to organize the words. At first glance kids impulsively sorted into two clear categories, winter and summer then hit a roadblock with nouns that were places, like TD Garden and Fenway Park.

Eventually, paired groups brought their category labels to the rug where our larger debate happened. The final two labels given were Bruins hockey essentials and Red Sox Baseball essentials. This was engaging and only took about 15 minutes.

Day 150 - Improving Comprehension Skills: The Read Aloud - Ms Varrell - Pine Glen Grade 2

This post first appeared on Ms. Varrell's Blog

Reading aloud is one of the most precious gifts anyone can give to a child. Although we traditionally associate it with 'snuggle time' for the very young (e.g. Dr. Seuss, Nursery Rhymes, Pat the Bunny, etc.), it can also be a tremendous source of critical thinking and high-level comprehension as well. Just because your child has started school (or has been in school for several years) doesn't mean that reading aloud to your child now is any less important than it was at two or three years old. :)

Recently, this TedTalk by Rebecca Bellingham, caught my attention. It is a short and sweet explanation of how reading aloud to children can significantly enhance their understanding beyond the walls of the classroom.

Day 141 - Mill Pond Reservoir Trip - Miss Varrell - Pine Glen Grade 2

This post first appeared on Miss Varrell's Blog

We recently went on a field trip to the Mill Pond Reservoir to observe and experience three different habitats of our local area.  Different classrooms attended the field trip at different times so this video highlights Miss Varrell's group with some children from Mrs. Beaulieu's class. Here's a slideshow of our experience. Thank you to our two chaperones, Mrs. Wisniewski and Ms. Romero, for helping us on our trip (unfortunately they didn't make it into the video)! Get ready to pause on the slides because it runs really quickly. Enjoy the show!

Day 34 - Elementary Schools start implementing KTL- Comprehension

Grade Two students have been working with two-column notes to help revisit some stories that they have been reading. They have been learning about Problem/Solution within a text. Here they are working independently to find the different solutions that were tried by the characters in their story, Pinky the Pig. We did the first two solutions together and then they completed the others on their own. They then used the two-column note to help them retell the story. They really enjoyed this activity.

Day 169 - A Visit to the Burlington Community Garden - Mrs. Scott - Francis Wyman Grade 2

This post first appeared on Mrs. Scott's Blog

(Last week) we took a walk out to the Burlington Community Garden.  For those of you who don't know about it, it is located in the back left corner of the field at Francis Wyman.  Master Gardner Mr. Coppola talked to us about the Community Garden.  Each student got to plant a bean seed in the school garden.  During our visit we also got to walk around the community garden to see what has already been planted.  Did you know that there is a large section where people plant and take care of vegetable for the Burlington Food Pantry?

Feel free to bring your child by during the summer to check out the progress our beans are making!

Day 149 - Friction - Mrs. Scott - Francis Wyman Grade 2

This post first appeared on Mrs. Scott's Blog

Today Mr. Musselman came to 213 to teach us about friction.  Our class did some wondering, predicting, and investigating to see what types of materials were affected by friction and cause heat.  Mr. Musselman used an infrared camera to help us test the materials.
