Did you know that all animals (and plants, viruses, and other organisms, for that matter) have official, international names that are in Latin (or Latinized forms)? The so-called ‘binomial nomenclature’ (from the Latin word “nomen” meaning “name”) are the official genus and species designations for animals in the scientific community. For example, canis familiaris refers to the common domestic dog. Last week students in Magister Stringer’s Latin II class spent an engaging period combining their learning of Latin with biology in BHS’ Science Center on an interactive scavenger hunt. Students were given a list of Latin sentences describing animals, their body parts, and their actions. Students then had to figure out which animals were being referenced and film themselves interacting with them as instructed by the sentences and then finally make connections to how those words related to some of the animals’ Latinized binomials. Fun and learning were had by all!

Day 161 - Reading With New Amigos! - Mrs. Hoyt - Pine Glen Kindergarten
What happens when you bring a room full of 5 and 6-year-old students together with a group of 17 and 18-year-old high school students?...Lots of fun, dancing, sharing and learning!
Today room 103 hosted Burlington High School AP Spanish students for our first session of a reading program to be held over the coming weeks. The high school students, along with their teachers, Professors DeSousa and Dacey traveled to Pine Glen to learn and be with us. The visit could have been intimidating for either group of students but all had a wonderful time!
We began our visit with a greeting activity. Friends in room 103 had practiced a Spanish greeting and were prepared to say "Hola Amigos" to their new friends! Next, we invited our visitors to dance with us. Thankfully the high school students and teachers were very receptive and realized quickly that they needed to get to our level (physically) pretty quickly! There are some pretty great dancers in both groups!
Students then broke off into various sections of the room to read books together. It was awesome!

All gathered back as a group. We shared our knowledge of the 7 continents and the visitors helped us discover where in the world Spanish is spoken. They taught us both number words and color words in Spanish. We also had time to discuss other languages we all know. We have a very multi-linguistic group!
Our visit ended with hugs and high fives!
The teachers all agreed that the experience was muy bien!

Day 177 - Map Adventures ~ BHS Juniors teach our Elementary Students - BHS Foreign Language Dept.
Señora Dacey and Profe DeSousa’s Spanish IV Juniors spearheaded an adventure through South America last week in the BHS Dance Studio. Along with the support of the BPS curriculum office, including Mr. Patrick Larkin and Mrs. Rosemary Camacho-DeSousa, we were able to rent a Giant Traveling Map of South America from National Geographic for two weeks this past month. When the map arrived to campus, the Spanish IV students explored the map and the contents that came along with the map’s treasure chest. The Juniors developed activity stations where they created hands on learning activities that were both fun and engaging in order to better reach the minds and spirits of the visiting elementary students from the Burlington Schools.
Upon arrival, the elementary learners were greeted by Junior student “tour guides” and, then, they began their “tour” of South America.
There were five “stops” on their itinerary including…
- an “I Spy” coloring activity of the Amazon Rain Forest animals,
- a Galapagos Island lesson on the famous finches and an even a guest appearance from “Cheeseburger” our BPS Science Center tortoise,
- an introduction to the northern region of South America, including its animals and their habitats,
- a scavenger hunt of various sites located in the southern region of South America along with a mountain building activity of the Andes,
- and a dance lesson of both the Salsa and Merengue latin dances
Students from Francis Wyman, Pine Glen, Memorial, and Fox Hill were energetic and excited. For that reason, our BHS Spanish students were thrilled to interact and teach the young learners about the curricular theme that many are so passionate about at this stage of their Spanish learning career.
The BHS World Language Department looks forward to more interactive teaching experiences in the future regarding language and cultural learning opportunities with the students in the BPS system.
