Day 146 - 5th Grade History Scavenger Hunt A Success!! - Mrs. Burns - Memorial School Grade 5

5th Grade teams went out in search of the places marked by Amos Doolittle in his famous prints of the American Revolution.  They had studied these prints while learning about the American Revolution and then took photos of the same locations in Lexington and Concord. They met some historians along the way eager to share their accounts of what happened on April 19, 1775 and "The Shot Heard Around the World" Students will be using these photographs to build a Digital Map Project using Google Maps.

We met a National Parks Ranger outside Hartwell Tavern on our way down the Battle Road.

We met a gentleman called Edmund Foster who was at this stretch of Battle Road called "The Bloody Angle" who told us what he saw that day on April 19, 1775.

Day 135 - Memorial School Starts Geography Club - Mrs. Burns

Memorial's first ever Geography Club started today. Fourth and Fifth graders are getting ready to take on the Mystery Skype Challenge with other schools across the country and even the globe. Today we had a Mystery Country challenge as well as a Kahoot Geography Review competition.

Day 51 - BFG Global Read Aloud Book Culminating Project: Dream Jars! - Mrs. Burns - Memorial School Grade 5

Students today in Mrs. Burns ELA class who have recently  finished our Global Read Aloud of the book BFG (Big Friendly Giant ) by Ronald Dahl got to present their Dream Jars.  Students painted their Dream Jar, wrote a dream to put inside using lots of BFG's special words so they could write their dream from the Point of View of the Giant. They even built me a bookcase in the back of our room to showcase all these wonderful jars. Today they did a Gallery Walk of all the Dream Jars and got to read all these amazing dreams. Great job! ( A BIG thank you to Mrs. York for lending us all the paint and brushes :) 

Day 23 - Global Read Aloud Mystery Skype - Mrs. Burns - Memorial School Grade 5

Mrs. Burns ELA class kicked off the Global Read Aloud on Monday with a Mystery Skype. There are 960,000 students around the world reading the same books the next 6 weeks! Our class was able to guess through a series of yes and no questions that it was a school in California- Mrs. Townsend's class  in Pleasanton, CA at the Donlon Elementary School.

Day 124 - MCBA Book Trailers - Mrs. Burns - Memorial Grade 5

5th Graders in Mrs. Burns ELA Class made persuasive book trailers to persuade 4th and 5th Grade MCBA Voters to vote for their favorite book.  These trailers were shown at 4th/5th Grade Lunch.

Day 49 - Making a Scale Model of the Solar System - Mrs. Burns - Memorial School Grade 5

Today we attempted to make a scale model of the solar system on our soccer field. See if you can notice all the planets and sun in the video.

Day 149 - Middlesex Math Madness Tourney - Mrs. Burns - Memorial School Grade 5

(This past weekend) was the Middlesex Math Madness Tournament held at Memorial Elementary. Twenty- five teams from 9 different towns competed in a Math-Olympiad type tournament. Memorial was well represented with two fourth grade teams and two fifth grade teams. Burlington also had teams competing for Francis Wyman, Pine Glenn and Marshall Simonds Middle schools.

Pictured below are the fabulous fifth grade teams. Rushil Patel was the highest scoring fifth grader in the individual event and tied with four other students for third- place in the individual competition. A nail biting tie-breaker determined the third-place winner would be from Tewksbury. One of the fifth grade teams was 1 point away from being tied for third place for the team event. Congrats to all the fourth and fifth graders!

We had some Memorial Alumni from Marshall Simonds win top prizes. Max Samulka, 6th grade, won 2nd place for the individual event and the Marshall Simmonds team including Memorial Alumni, Kris Poirier -won 2nd place for the team event!

The other two winners were from Newton and Tewksbury

                                          Top winning teams from Wilmington, Burlington, and Newton.
