Day 31 - They all want to be....Scientists!! - Mrs. Pangiotopoulos - Memorial School Grade 1

This post first appeared on Mrs. Panagiotopoulos' Blog
We are having a fantastic learning experience studying our new science topic Plant Parts and Functions. Yesterday, the students led discussions about what parts are and which living and nonliving things have parts.

Then , our budding scientists observed and dissected a flower. They used iPads to take photos and science journals to draw their observations, take notes, and write any ideas or questions down. Can't wait to meet tomorrow and have a group talk about what everyone noticed.

Stay tuned to see what other amazing learning experiences and experiments we will be doing in the next few days and upcoming weeks!

Day 6 - Whole Brain Teaching - Mrs. Panagiotopoulos - Memorial School Grade 1

This post originally appeared on Mrs. Panagiotopoulos' Blog

It was a long week for everyone but we finished strong! The children worked really hard at practicing our new rules and putting them into effect. I use rules from Whole Brain Teaching, as well as attention getters, some games, and a few other ideas. Here is a link to what it is all about if you are interested.

Ask your children the rule # and they should be able to show you the gestures and tell you the rule:
Rule #1 follow directions quickly
Rule #2 raise your hand for permission to speak
Rule #3 raise your hand for permission to leave your seat
Rule #4 make smart choices
Rule #5 keep your dear teacher happy
Diamond Rule keep your eye on the target

I'll go over these a little more at open house on Wednesday. There are 2 sessions: 6:30-7 in classroom, 7-7:30 in cafe, 7:30-8 repeat in classroom. I look forward to seeing you there!

In the meantime, enjoy the videos of the kids practicing and our selfie :)
