Day 17 - September counseling theme: Appropriate behavior - Mrs. Tilton - Pine Glen Guidance

Welcome back for another school year! We are so excited to see new and familiar faces and get the routines and activities kicked off. This summer, a group of Pine Glen staff met to go over our PBIS plan for the school year. We reworked our ASK model to be in line with our school mascot, the owl and came up with this:

W - Work to be appropriate
I - It's important to be safe
S - Strive to be kind
E - Everyone Matters

We encourage all students to be WISE with their decision making and how they treat themselves, their peers and their community. The group also worked on monthly themes to guide the counseling lessons for the year. For September, I went into classrooms and discussed appropriate behavior with all grades. We used two books to discuss the theme:

K-2: "David Goes to School" by David Shannon

3-5: "What if Everybody Did That?" by Colleen Madden

This post first appeared on the Pine Glen Counseling Blog

Both books explore appropriate and expected behaviors that we need to use both in school and out in the world. Students discussed why inappropriate behaviors such as littering, calling out in class and being loud in the library can impact both the school community and the Burlington community at large. We discussed more appropriate behaviors to use in school and the community and how it creates a more positive impact. I am very excited to continue going into classrooms to both teach and learn from my students throughout the year!
